Crafty Updates: Fan Expo

Fan Expo Canada starts tomorrow! Eeee! This is the largest convention that I sell at every year. It's also the most fun. The convention takes over the entire Metro Toronto Convention Centre for 4 days and it's incredibly busy and chaotic, but also amazing.

My table is in Artist Alley at A351. If you come to the show over the weekend, feel free to come say hi!

August has become so incredibly busy for me while I finish up prep work for this show. I've been sewing like crazy, with both new fabrics and scraps of old fabrics that I had buried in my fabric bins. I'm pretty excited and happy with the stock I have to bring to this year's show.

I have more stock this year than I've ever had for Fan Expo. I wanted to make sure I covered all the big fandom bases this year (especially Pokemon and Harry Potter).

I'll be back next week after my 4-days of Fan Expo fun!

Pumpkin Season is Coming

Yes, it's still August. However, companies are already promoting the Pumpkin season and it makes me so excited! Starting next week I'll be able to drink weekly pumpkin spice lattes and look for pumpkin treats in the grocery store (Canada has a pathetic selection in comparison to the U.S. though).

I know new items will pop up this year but these are my favourite pumpkin treats that I'm looking forward to.

Clockwise from top left corner:

1. Tim Horton's Pumpkin Pie Iced Capp. It came out last year and I only had the one but it was really good. I've noticed it popping up on U.S. friends' instagrams so I'm assuming it'll be showing up at Canadian locations again.
2. Pumpkin Pie Blizzard at Dairy Queen. This has been coming out year after year for as long as I can remember and it's one of my favourite things! The graham cracker bits throughout the blizzard are perfect.
3. Pumpkin Chai tea from Davids Tea. I've said it again and again, but this is one…

What I'm Loving Now

Honestly, life has been mainly work and sewing for me lately. The couple of weeks leading up to Fan Expo are always a blur of fabric scraps, thread, sore hands, and getting through my shifts at work thanks to caffeine. It's during this time that I long for September, when I can slow down a bit on sewing, snuggle up on the couch to watch shows starting up for the fall season, and spend some evenings relaxing.

Fall

The idea of fall is so incredibly appealing right now - the cool weather, layered clothing, pretty coloured leaves, pumpkins, bonfires. We've sat around so many bonfires this summer which is one of my favourite things but we have plans for some fall bonfires too. Afternoons and early evenings, layered in clothes, and using the fire to keep us warm (and the mosquitoes will be gone too!). I can't wait!

A friend introduced me to something wonderful last month - Dutch sprinkles. They are incredibly tasty and there's a wide range of flavours. I've…

Fall is Coming

Yesterday I received one of my favourite yearly emails - the Davids Tea Fall Collection! This is easily my favourite collection they have ever done, from the tea flavours to the packaging to the mug designs.

Woodland Bear seems to be the theme of the packaging and mug designs and I'm loving it all. The urge to buy this travel mug is strong and I might have to add a new mug to my already overflowing collection.

The tea flavours sound amazing too:
- Pumpkin Chai
- Blueberry Muffin
- Carrot Cupcake
- Pom Cider
- Nutty Granola Crunch

Pumpkin Chai comes out every year at Davids Tea and it's by far one of my favourite teas. I drink it all year round because I buy enough at the end of winter to get me through until it's out again. But I'm so curious to try the Carrot Cupcake and Pom Cider. They sound right up my alley.

Once I try some of the new teas I'll be sure to report back on how they are!

S'mores Recipes

Today is the last day of IGGPPCamp (which you can read about here) and in celebration of it I made a couple of s'mores recipes recently.

A recipe for S'mores French Toast was shared on the IGGPPC blog a few days ago. You can find the recipe here. I unfortunately wasn't able to join in the bake-along for it yesterday so I made the french toast the other day when both Adam and myself were off work.

Holy crap, it's incredible! If you like s'mores and french toast please do yourself a favour and try this recipe out!

The second recipe I made was a s'mores dip. I shared the recipe on the IGGPPC blog today. You can check out the recipe here. It was incredibly easy to make and so good!

Did you participate in any #IGGPPCamp activities this past weekend? As usual it was super fun and it's a little sad that it's over for the year.

My Life In Photos

I know I say it every month but August has gone by way too quick. It's probably because I've been incredibly busy and every free moment is accounted for in some way (sewing, social plans, appointments, Pokemon). After Fan Expo I plan on spending a week relaxing. I will go to work and come home to lounge on the couch. No plans, no chores, no errands.
These are my photos from the last couple of weeks...
The turtles are getting big.

The cats have claimed the guest room. Logan has taken to sleeping right on the pillows.

One of my favourite places this Summer - Moonlight Beach.

How I spend most evenings: sewing.

I saw Gwen Stefani in concert in Toronto at the beginning of the month. It was an incredible night and she was absolutely amazing.

My face most days when I make my to-do list. Give me all the caffeine to get through the next couple of weeks!

Summer Camp: IGGPPCamp 2016

Tomorrow marks the start of our third annual Summer Camp over at International Geek Girl Pen Pals Club. It's one of my favourite things about summer and I'm excited to participate in some activities, read all the forum activities, and jump into some watch-alongs and bake-alongs.

From the 18th-22nd there are tons of activities happening, new blog posts going up on the site, and forum activities to participate in. If you're looking for something fun to try this weekend, head to the camp handbook to check all the details out.

I made up a yummy s'mores-related recipe for camp and once my post goes live, I'll definitely share the recipe. I also plan on trying out the s'mores french toast recipe that will be happening on Sunday too.

Fall Itch

I apologize to everyone who follows me on Pinterest or Tumblr. I'm susceptible to all the retail merchandising happening right now. My mind is being filled with Fall-related things. I'm longing for chilly weather, layered clothing, hot drinks, pumpkins, and red leaves.

I know! Summer isn't over and it's only the middle of August, but the constant heat waves we've been having this year have me drowning in my own sweat and I desperately want to break out all my leggings and boots and buy all the Fall-scented candles.

Stationery Favourites

Back to School is everywhere right now. My work is filled with backpacks and lunch bags, the grocery store has bins of pens, glue sticks, and notebooks, and Walmart's seasonal section is filled with all school necessities. This was one of my favourite things about going back to school; buying new pens and pencils, filling up my new pencil case, and picking out the perfect notebooks, binders, and file folders. To this day I'm jealous of all the kids going back to school and starting a fresh school year.
Luckily working for IGGPPC, running my own Etsy shop, and having a love for to-do lists and snail mail, I use stationery pretty regularly. As I've been eyeing up all the new products showing up in store and in my email inbox, these top my list of what I'd love to buy for September.

1. Spiral Notebook 2. Lap Desk 3. Hello Darling Stationery

4. Shining Neko Stickers
5. 2017 Planner
6. Booklight

The lap desk and booklight would be amazing things to have at home right now …

S'mores Day

Today is National S'mores Day and to celebrate I rounded up some easy to make s'mores recipes that look and sound incredible!

1. Peanut Butter S'mores Cookie Pie
2. S'mores Hot Chocolate
3. S'mores Baked Donuts
4. S'mores Cupcakes

All of these recipes seem super easy to try and that hot chocolate just might be happening tonight. I have two other s'mores recipes to try over the next couple of weeks for the IGGPPC Summer Camp so I'll be sure to share those recipes and how they turned out once they've been made and eaten!

What's your favourite s'mores recipe?

What I'm Reading Now

Never in my life have I had so many books on the go. I have two novels on my bedside table that are both partially read, an audiobook over half way done, and a graphic novel sitting on the floor that hasn't been touched in a couple of weeks.

This is what happens when new books are released and I can't stop myself from starting them even when I have books on the go already.

1. The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney (audiobook)

I needed a new audiobook and this book has been in my face constantly. Chapters Indigo has been advertising it like crazy in their emails so I looked to see if there was an audiobook. There is and I'm enjoying it thoroughly. It's a great story, very interesting, and I'm enjoying all the characters.

2. The Importance of Being Married by Gemma Townley (novel)

I picked this book up at a garage sale and it's been sitting on my shelf forever. I thought it was time to read it and that it would be the perfect light book to read throughout Summer…

Midnight Magic: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Last Saturday was Midnight Magic, which was the release party for the new Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. The book was to be available at midnight, as the release date was July 31st. Our local Chapters Indigo book store was holding at Midnight Magic event and I knew I had to attend since I had never been to a midnight release for anything.
Chapters has a Starbucks inside and I was planning on trying my first Butterbeer frappuccino (from the Starbucks Secret Menu) since I was always too chicken to ask for the elaborate drink. However, they thought ahead and turned themselves into the Three Broomsticks and had multiple Harry Potter-inspired drinks. It was extra fun ordering a Butterbeer Frappuccino using the name, and not asking for a crazy custom drink.

The drink was delicious and I'd definitely get it again. There was an incredible amount of caramel throughout the frapp which was amazing. And I liked the final touch of adding cinnamon to the top of the whip…

Wild Blueberry Adventures

When we moved to Sudbury we heard from co-workers about the wild blueberries that grew throughout and around the city. Then Summer happened and we saw cars parked up and down all the highways leading out of the city, saw people with baskets upon baskets climbing out of bushes on the side of the road. That's when we decided to go on the hunt for some wild blueberries of our own.
We've tried a few different locations in the city, though last Summer proved to be a bad season for the wild blueberries, which led to Sudbury having a bad black bear problem in the city since they didn't have enough berries to eat.
Finally, three years after moving here, we've found a few good places to find wild blueberries. This year we hit the jackpot, especially since the blueberries were larger than we've ever seen. Wild blueberries are tiny in comparison to normal ones you'd find at the grocery store. They also grow only ankle-high instead of being on plants eye-level. It makes …

What I'm Loving Now

Seriously, how is it August? It's bittersweet that Summer is half over. Summer has been so much fun this year but it'll be over before I know it. On the other hand, this means Autumn is around the corner which is easily my favourite season of them all!

Pokemon Go

One reason the last half of July flew by is because of the new app, Pokemon Go. We've been out for evening walks, made trips downtown, and spent time at the boardwalk catching Pokemon, fighting gyms, and stocking up on Poke balls. It's been incredibly fun, I'm getting lots of sunshine and my legs are a little sore from all the walking. But this game has made my days fly by. We race through our errands and chores so we can spend time walking around outside to find Pokemon.

Playing Pokemon in the car is interesting. You can find some really good Pokemon driving through different neighbourhoods, or you can end up with yet another Weedle on your knee.

I was hoping to catch so many Magikarp at the park but only …
